Ode to DeVerle.

March 12, 2013
The weather has all of the sudden turned kind of perfect. (Cue me shoving my lap top aside to knock on my dresser real fast – don’t fail me now, sunshine!) I can hardly stay inside! All the back roads and pretty skies and windy afternoons are calling my name.
This part of the year is so beautiful. First spring always reminds me of late fall – the way the air bites in your lungs, the way the sun not-quite-warms your skin, but brightens your day, the way bare branches look stark against the sky.
I like to enjoy this kind of weather on my bike. I have a theory that bike rides are like chicken soup for the soul. (Side note, what HAPPENED to those books, though? They were the best bathroom time reading material in the world. Either you’re violently agreeing with me right now, or you’re trying to block out memories of being touched by an ANGEL as you read those tales on your porcelain
throne).
I will be riding a bike on my mission in May, and I have to be honest. No matter how attached I may get to whatever bike I buy out there… it’s going to be hard to top my love for DeVerle.
DeVerle is my purple cruiser bike. And even though I’m pretty sure this poem is in every journal I’ve ever kept, and I’ve posted it here before… This poem is truly how I feel when I ride my bike. So here’s to you, DeVerle.

The Rider

Naomi Shihab Nye

A boy told me
if he roller-skated fast enough
his loneliness couldn’t catch up to him,
the best reason I ever heard
for trying to be a champion.

What I wonder tonight
pedaling hard down King William Street
is if it translates to bicycles.

A victory! To leave your loneliness
panting behind you on some street corner
while you float free into a cloud of sudden azaleas,
pink petals that have never felt loneliness,
no matter how slowly they fell.

Ok, I LOVE this. There is seriously nothing better than a bike ride. I really hope I have to ride a bike on my mission! I don't think I could handle 18 months without a bike ride.

Oh, my! You're too sweet. They're just iPhone photos, so not the best quality. Thanks for dropping by and making my day! 🙂
